FIRST, LAST & NEXT

Night sky photographer and teacher Mario Rubio knows that hard work is the secret to success

Nikon Camera

First?

A Nikon D40x about 14 years ago. I loved how I felt when I started to take night photos with it. I felt I had something really good in my hands.

Last?

I have a Nikon Z 7 right now. I love that I can use ISO 12800 without any problems with noise.

Next?

I’d love to have a Nikon with flip-up screen that moves in all directions.

Commission

First?

I’ve been teaching night photography since 2008. I felt so happy when I realised that photography could be my way of life.

Last?

My online school, fotografonocturno.com/ciclo-webinars includes classes on night photography, landscape, street, macro and many other techniques.

Next?

I’ve been travelling around the world for many years and I really need to take a flight as soon as possible. My heart, my mind and my camera need it.

Location shoot

First?

The first shot with my D40x was taken in my birthplace, Cuenca in Spain. I discovered the magic of blue hour and have been in love with it since then.

Last?

I shoot a lot in Tenerife. I like to show people how beautiful a seascape can be from a photographic point of view.

Next?

I’d like to travel to the Faroe Islands, to explore their beautiful coasts and landscapes.

First?

I was hired to work at a well-known photography school in Barcelona. I was very happy and the money seemed so unimportant back then.

Last?

Fortunately, I find my name almost every day in workshops, interviews and so on. But it reminds me that I can’t stop working hard every day.

Next?

Luckily for me, Nikon Pro!

Lucky break

First?

In 2011, José Benito Ruiz, a leading Spanish photographer, asked me to join him in an online workshop. Over two million people saw it.

Last?

Honestly, today I do not believe in lucky breaks. I believe in being honest and doing my best each day.

Next?

I’m working hard to get my school recognised all over the world.

Problem solved

First?

After not getting invites to some night photography events, I was upset but then eventually realised that you can’t attend everything, and it doesn’t mean that you’re not any good.

Last?

Fortunately, I haven’t had any big problems recently and everything

keeps going well.

Next?

I’m very active on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and it’s hard not to pay attention to negative messages. I try to learn from reviews and not let them worry me.
