FIRST, LAST & NEXT

Fashion and celebrity shooter Christopher Bissell on his 40-year career and his future in photography

Nikon Camera

First?

Nikon F2. I loved that it was both user-friendly and bulletproof.

Last?

A Nikon D810. I love the familiar feel, interface and its ease of use. Feels a lot like my other Nikons.

Next?

D850 would be the next model I would consider.

Commission

First?

In the 1970s, when I worked as the main advertorial photographer for Monday Magazine in Canada.

Last?

At London Queer Fashion Show, shooting not only backstage but also a special session with the host Courtney Act and model Tess Holliday. It was wonderful. One of the best fashion shows ever.

Next?

Shooting a new portrait of the iconic fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, who recently turned 80.

Location shoot

First?

In Fiji, overlooking a cruise ship. Photos of the sea, islands and cruise. A magical moment of breath-taking beauty.

Last?

South-east London on one of my river walks. A photo of Freddie, a fox who often meets me and now makes regular appearances on my Instagram. People love my shots and story snippets of Freddie. He’s very popular.

Next?

Vancouver, Canada. I look forward to going there as it was my childhood home, a place of outstanding beauty. The next job will be with up-and-coming models. It’s always exciting to see young, fresh talent.

First?

That was Monday Magazine and felt incredible, as if I’d arrived as a photographer and that a career in photography was a very real possibility. So wonderful to be credited for simply doing something I love.

Last?

In Zandra Rhodes’ new book, 50 Fabulous Years In Fashion. It features some of my work. It’s always a very special feeling when I work with her. We go back a long way and she’s such a special and inspiring person.

Next?

A forthcoming book with John Cleese.

Lucky break

First?

A friend recommended me for a job covering the 1978 Commonwealth Games [in Edmonton, Canada]. I used the experience to launch myself as a fashion photographer.

Last?

At a recent preview, I met a well-known designer who wants to shoot a new campaign with me. It’s always exciting working with someone new.

Next?

I enjoyed being on Britain’s Next Top Model as judge and photographer and would love to be back on TV. It was so much fun and it’s natural for me. I feel comfortable in front of the camera and love the live interaction on set.

Problem solved

First?

I don’t recognise setbacks, I look for the positive in everything. For example, shooting my series The Homecoming, I hired a Spitfire and it rained on the day. But I took advantage of that to enhance the mood.

Last?

East London, shooting a Zandra Rhodes collection. Freezing wind-chill of -3°C. I’m always aware of models’ comfort, so I knew I had to be fast. The models leapt around, keeping warm, and their dynamic flair gave the shoot an edge.

Next?

Preparing a shoot, I visualise all that’ll be required and employ a wonderful team who I trust to deal with any eventualities. With planning, support and my confidence as a photographer, life always has a way of working out. The glass is always half-full.
